hello. I just did a fresh install of jruby 9.0.4.0 on an ubuntu linux machine
<uberjar>
jruby 9.0.4.0 (2.2.2) 2015-11-12 b9fb7aa Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 25.66-b17 on 1.8.0_66-b17 +jit [linux-amd64]
<uberjar>
for some reason when I issue the command: jruby -S gem install bundler
<uberjar>
it just freezes, hangs forever
<uberjar>
there are no firewall rules, and this is in a public cloud
uberjar has quit [Quit: uberjar]
<headius>
uberjar: hello
<headius>
do ctrl+\ in the same console where it's hanging
<headius>
it does sound like a network issue of some kind
<nirvdrum>
headius: Hi there. Do you or enebo happen to have a mini DP -> VGA connector? I'm having trouble finding mine and would rather finish packing everything else if I don't need to worry about this :-)
<headius>
nirvdrum: we both do, and I'm sure there will be several at the event as well :-)
<nirvdrum>
Great. Otherwise I was going to string together my mini DP -> DVI and DVI -> VGA connectors.
<headius>
you're flying tomorrow?
<nirvdrum>
Yeap.
<nirvdrum>
I leave at 8:45 and land at 17:05 the following day.
<nirvdrum>
It's like a time machine.
<headius>
that's 17:05 wednesday or thursday?
<nirvdrum>
Wed.
<headius>
ok cool
<nirvdrum>
I fly out Tues. morning, land Wed. evening.
<headius>
oh right, it's still Monday there :-)
<nirvdrum>
And then I'm going to try one of the limousine buses.
<nirvdrum>
Barely, but it's Monday still :-)
<headius>
where are you staying?
<nirvdrum>
Tokyo Hilton (near Shinjuku station).
<nirvdrum>
enebo had recommended getting a mifi at the airport, but I didn't think I'd need it. But I was just reading that Japan is all CDMA. Is that still accurate, do you know? If so, I guess I'll need the mifi after all.
<headius>
nirvdrum: yeah that might be
<headius>
it's pretty easy to get a mifi
<nirvdrum>
I was just hoping to cut out one more thing to drag around and be responsible for. T-Mobile doesn't charge for international roaming or data, so it's generally fantastic. But, they're a GSM network so I have a GSM phone.
<headius>
nirvdrum: how long are you going to be here?
<nirvdrum>
Until the following Wed.

<headius>
did enebo say when he would arrive in Tokyo?
<headius>
I think he's supposed to get here today but I haven't heard from him
<nirvdrum>
I thought he flew out yesterday.
<nirvdrum>
I assumed he had already landed and made contact.
<nirvdrum>
Maybe he wanted some alone time with his lady friend before being surrounded by programmers again :-)
<nirvdrum>
How's your son liking the trip so far?
<headius>
he loves it...wants to look into studying abroad here either during HS or after
<nirvdrum>
Cool.
<nirvdrum>
How's the weather been?
<GitHub171>
[jruby] headius created block-protocol-jit (+2 new commits): http://git.io/vR1Py

<headius>
nirvdrum: cold
<headius>
well, cold for Tokyo... 40s and 50s
<headius>
no rain that I've seen though
<nirvdrum>
Cool. I've been trying to work out whether I should bring a winter jacket. 40s is still sweatshirt weather.

What's the support for Java enums in JRuby marshal / unmarshal? Currently, in 1.7.23, un-marshalling enums using anonymous classes fails. For example, https://gist.github.com/jmiettinen/798905ccf51235de6f08 causes error of form "undefined class/module Java::SimpleCase::1"

<codefinger>
mkristian_: i feel like 2.0.0.rc2 is optimistic :) there are still a lot of problems with `compiled`
<codefinger>
i want to kill compiled
<mkristian_>
just had a little pro and con of compiled feature internally since we needed to turn it off as well to get things working
<mkristian_>
codefinger, so we will not use compiled with warbler-2.0.0.x
tenderlove has joined #jruby
<codefinger>
interesting
<codefinger>
were the cons all bugs? or where there other reasons not to use it?
<mkristian_>
there was a remark from enebo recently that AOT is slower on startup since there are much more classes - one per method
<mkristian_>
and in the long-run there is no big difference.
<codefinger>
mkristian_: yea, my understanding is that there are a few if any performance reasons to use it. but i think many people still want to obfuscate code
<mkristian_>
for me the compiled feature is a obfuscating feature :)
<mkristian_>
yes
<codefinger>
mkristian_: wrt rc2, i'm thinking about calling it beta3. is it weird to go backward like that?
<mkristian_>
I think regarding rubygems version is not picking beta3 after rc1
skade has joined #jruby
<codefinger>
ah
<mkristian_>
yes, just checked it. not sure if this is big problem.

it just a name. i'll call it rc2, w/o much hope that it will be the final
